Hypnotherapy
What Is Hypnotherapy?
Hypnotherapy is a guided and collaborative process that uses focused attention, relaxation, and therapeutic suggestion to help you work with thoughts, emotions, beliefs, and behavioral patterns. Despite what movies and stage hypnosis may suggest, you are not unconscious or out of control. You remain aware and able to communicate throughout the process.
In fact, hypnosis is a naturally occurring state of focused attention. Think about becoming completely absorbed in a book, driving a familiar route and realizing you barely remember the drive, or becoming so focused on an activity that you lose track of time.
Hypnotherapy intentionally uses this focused state to support the changes you want to make.
You remain in control throughout the experience. You can hear me, communicate with me, and choose whether a suggestion feels right for you.
And no—you can't get “stuck” in hypnosis!
Hypnotherapy vs. Psychotherapy: What's the Difference?
Stand-alone hypnotherapy is generally focused on a specific goal or desired change. For example, you may want to increase confidence, improve motivation, address a particular habit, or change a pattern that no longer serves you. The focus is typically on the goal and the techniques being used to support that change rather than diagnosing or treating a mental health condition. For example when hypnosis has been used to quit smoking, losing weight, and etc. Which means hypnotherapy sessions can be offered alone without the context of psychotherapy.
Psychotherapy, on the other hand, involves the assessment and treatment of mental health, emotional, behavioral, relational, or psychological concerns. Therapy may involve exploring your history, relationships, symptoms, patterns, trauma, emotions, and the factors contributing to what you're experiencing.
Hypnotherapy can be incorporated into psychotherapy when it is clinically appropriate. In this case, hypnosis becomes one of the therapeutic tools we may use alongside other approaches.
What Can Hypnotherapy Help With?
People seek hypnotherapy for many different reasons. Depending on your individual needs and whether hypnotherapy is being provided independently or within psychotherapy, it may be used to support goals involving:
-
Anxiety and stress
-
Confidence and self-esteem
-
Motivation
-
Unwanted habits or behaviors
-
Limiting beliefs
-
Emotional patterns
-
Performance concerns
-
Relationship or intimacy concerns
-
Sexual concerns
-
Personal growth and behavior change
Hypnotherapy isn't a magic fix, and everyone's experience is different. Instead, think of it as another tool that may help you approach a problem from a different direction.
